United We Learn: Families of Every Kind

United We Learn: Families of Every Kind is a heartwarming children’s book for children in foster, kinship, adoptive, blended, and nontraditional families—and for the caring adults who support them.

Set in a welcoming school community and narrated by Annabelle Jenkins, the story introduces young readers to families formed in many different ways, while gently exploring belonging, empathy, confidence, emotional safety, and adjusting to change.

Created for children ages 4–9, this book opens meaningful conversations and reminds every child of a powerful truth: your family matters, your story matters, and you belong.

In United We Learn, follow Annabelle Jenkins on a tour of her school, United Elementary, where she shows us the value of diversity and inclusion.

The story includes rich vocabulary and is told from the viewpoint of an elementary-aged Golden Retriever, Annabelle, who embodies maturity and silliness. All species of animals are welcome at United Elementary, and staff ensures that the necessary adjustments are made for the success of all students.

United We Learn emphasizes the importance of embracing differences and celebrating each individual's uniqueness.

The social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies that are in this book include:

  • social awareness (diversity and inclusion)

  • self-awareness

  • relationship skills

Together we celebrate differences as a source of strength and inspiration to learn from one another.
